SK Chimney Sweep & Son
Professional Chimney Sweeping Measham - & Across North West Leicestershire and Derbyshire

As an established chimney sweep covering Measham and the wider areas of North West Leicestershire and Derbyshire, one of the questions we hear most often is how frequently a chimney should be cleaned.

Best practice within the industry is to have chimneys used for wood or coal swept every six months, while systems burning smokeless fuels should be swept annually. For the best results, it’s wise to arrange your sweep ahead of the colder months. This helps ensure your appliance is operating safely, efficiently, and ready for regular use when winter arrives.

Fully Qualified, Licensed & Insured

S.K. Chimney Sweeps provide professional sweeping for a wide range of appliances and flue systems. Our service covers:

  • AGA installations

  • Rayburn ranges

“Regular chimney sweeping reduces fire hazards and the build-up of dangerous carbon monoxide. Always choose a qualified chimney sweep and make sure you receive confirmation that the work has been completed."

All work is fully certified and carried out with full insurance for your peace of mind.

Preparing for Your Chimney Sweep Visit

To help your appointment run efficiently and safely, please complete the following steps before your chimney sweep takes place in Sheffield or across South Yorkshire.

Make sure the area around your fireplace or stove is completely clear. Any nearby furniture, decorative items, or valuables should be moved away to create a safe working space.

Your chimney must be cold before sweeping can begin. Fires may be used the evening before, provided they are left to burn out naturally. All boilers, AGAs, and Rayburn appliances must be turned off or extinguished no later than 24 hours prior to your appointment.

Please remove any ash and unused fuel from the firebox. This helps keep the sweep clean, quick, and efficient.

A nearby electrical socket is required to power professional equipment. Ideally, this should be located within three metres of the fireplace.

Ensure there is clear and unobstructed access from outside to the fireplace area, allowing equipment to be brought in safely.

How Long Will the Sweep Take?

Most chimney sweeps are completed in approximately 30 minutes. However, this can vary depending on:

  • The overall condition of the chimney

  • How long it has been since the last sweep

  • Whether any obstructions are present, such as bird nests or debris

Every chimney sweep appointment includes:

  • A comprehensive inspection of the chimney and flue

  • Assessment of fire safety and carbon monoxide risks

  • Thorough sweeping using professional-grade brushes and a HEPA-filtered industrial vacuum

  • A smoke test to check airflow and correct operation

  • A chimney sweeping certificate suitable for insurance requirements
